History

High Contrast is the work of one producer from Cardiff, and his records did a lot to define what liquid drum and bass sounds like. The formula arrived early: a rolling break with the snare sitting back rather than snapping forward, a warm sub bass, cut-up soul and disco vocals treated with real affection rather than irony, and string arrangements borrowed from film scores. Where much of the genre in the early 2000s chased hardness, these tracks chased melody and space, and the crossover happened without the music thinning out. "Basement Track" is the drum programming at its most straightforward and most copied; "If We Ever" is the melodic end, closer to a song than to a club tool. He remained closely tied to the Hospital Records scene, and his profile widened when his music was used in the London Olympics ceremonies. A listener recognises the sound by the softness of the drums, which stay quick without ever sounding aggressive, and by the sampled voice carrying the tune.
