History

Rudimental put a live band behind drum and bass. The London production crew builds tracks on the genre's fast broken beats but fills the top with gospel-sized vocals, horn lines and piano, so the music works on daytime radio without slowing down. Feel the Love, a soaring guest vocal over a trumpet hook, reached number one in the UK and opened a run of singles that pulled the same trick with different singers: Waiting All Night, These Days, Not Giving In. The debut album Home also went to number one, and Waiting All Night took the Brit Award for British Single. On stage the idea reads more clearly than on record, since they tour as a large ensemble with brass and rotating vocalists rather than as two producers behind laptops. The recognisable Rudimental shape is a big emotional chorus riding a 174 bpm breakbeat, and it is the combination that carried drum and bass back into British pop after years spent mostly in clubs.
