History

London Elektricity is the long-running project of Tony Colman, and its sound is drum and bass with a musician's ear for jazz, soul, Latin rhythm, dub and even punk energy. Colman co-founded Hospital Records with Chris Goss, and London Elektricity began as their duo; the track "Song in the Key of Knife" first brought them wide attention. When Goss stepped back in 2002 to focus on running the business side, Colman kept the name as a solo producer and remained at the head of the label. While he was making Billion Dollar Gravy, released in 2003, the session players around him grew into a live band with bass, drums, vocalists and MCs, which gave the project a warmer, more played feel than most of the scene. Power Ballads followed in 2005 and Syncopated City in 2008. He names influences as far apart as Fela Kuti, Kraftwerk and Brian Eno. Through the label and his own records he became one of the central figures of liquid drum and bass, known for sunny chords, live-sounding grooves and a sense of humour.
