History

LTJ Bukem took jungle apart and rebuilt it around space rather than pressure. Where most producers in the early 1990s pushed the breakbeat to the front and stacked bass on top, he pulled the drums back, opened room for Rhodes chords, jazz voicings and long ambient pads, and let the break roll underneath instead of attacking. Music and Horizons are the tracks that defined this, both closer in feel to fusion records than to the dancefloor material around them, and both still used as the reference point when people describe atmospheric drum and bass. He ran his own label, which gave the style a home and a recognisable sleeve design, and the club night and compilation series attached to it carried the sound into rooms that had been sceptical of breakbeat music. His DJ sets ran long and were usually paired with a live MC working in a conversational register rather than a hyped one. Liquid drum and bass as a whole descends from what he was doing then.
