History
Gerald Maxwell Rivera grew up in Brooklyn and put out Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite in 1996, a song cycle that follows one relationship from beginning to end, cut with musicians including Stuart Matthewman, the guitarist and saxophonist from Sade. The arrangements move slowly: Rhodes piano, muted guitar, string writing, a rhythm section that stays out of the way while the falsetto floats above it. Embrya (1998) went further into long, amorphous forms, and Now (2001) reached number one in the United States. Then he stopped for most of a decade. BLACKsummers'night (2009) ended the silence and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album, carried by "Pretty Wings"; blackSUMMERS'night arrived in 2016 as the second part of a planned trilogy. Among the singers who came out of the mid-90s neo-soul wave, he is one of the few who built an entire catalogue on restraint instead of range, and the slow-burn ballad in that mould is still measured against him.
