Madonna Louise Ciccone was born August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan, and grew up in the Detroit suburbs. She moved to New York City in 1977 to pursue modern dance, performed with the groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, then signed to Sire Records (a Warner Bros. label) in 1982, launching a pop and dance-pop career built on synth-driven production and provocative reinvention of image and sound. Dubbed the "Queen of Pop," she built her catalog through albums including Like a Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light, and Confessions on a Dance Floor, pushing songs about sexuality, religion, and social themes into the mainstream and often into controversy.
