History
Laura Branigan (1952-2004) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress who became one of the defining voices of 1980s pop. Raised in Westchester County, New York, she spent the 1970s singing with the folk-rock group Meadow and touring Europe as a backing vocalist for Leonard Cohen before signing to Atlantic Records. Her 1982 single "Gloria," an English adaptation of an Italian Umberto Tozzi song, became her signature hit: it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, spent 36 weeks on the chart (a record for a female artist at the time), went platinum, and earned a Grammy nomination. She followed it with "Solitaire" and the Michael Bolton co-write "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," then hit again in 1984 with "Self Control," a Raf cover that topped the charts in Canada and Germany, and with "The Lucky One," which won the Tokyo Music Festival. Known for a powerful, husky four-octave alto, Branigan also acted on television and in film. She died in 2004 at age 52 of an undiagnosed brain aneurysm.
