History
Her 1990 debut opened with Vision of Love, and the melismatic runs on it were copied by a generation of singers, to mixed results. The five-octave range, and the whistle register at the top of it, arrived fully formed. Music Box (1993) sold enormously, and then Daydream (1995) did the more interesting thing: Fantasy put a Tom Tom Club loop under a pop chorus, and the remix brought in Ol' Dirty Bastard, which was not how pop singers worked with rappers at the time. One Sweet Day, with Boyz II Men, held number one for sixteen weeks. Butterfly (1997) went further into hip-hop production and into lighter, breathier singing. She has nineteen American number-one singles, more than any other solo artist, and co-wrote nearly all of them. All I Want for Christmas Is You, from 1994, returns to the chart every December decades after the fact.
