History
Whitney Houston (1963-2012) was an American singer and actress from Newark, New Jersey, who became one of pop and R&B's defining vocalists of the 1980s and 1990s. Discovered singing backup and in gospel choir as a teenager, she was signed to Arista Records by Clive Davis and released her self-titled debut album in 1985, followed by "Whitney" (1987), both multi-platinum successes built on her powerful, gospel-trained soprano. Her string of hits includes "Saving All My Love for You," "How Will I Know," "Greatest Love of All," and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." She set a Guinness World Record with seven consecutive US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles between 1985 and 1988. In 1992 she starred in "The Bodyguard," whose soundtrack and her cover of "I Will Always Love You" became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. Houston won multiple Grammy Awards and sold over 200 million records worldwide before her death in 2012.
