History
Irene Cara (1959-2022) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress born in the Bronx, New York, to a family of Cuban and Puerto Rican descent. A former child performer on Broadway and television, she broke through in 1980 starring as Coco Hernandez in the film "Fame" and singing its title song, which became an international hit. Her biggest success came in 1983 with "Flashdance... What a Feeling," the theme from "Flashdance," which she co-wrote with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and earned Cara a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Notably, she later sued her record label over unpaid royalties and won a landmark judgment in 1993, a case still cited in discussions of artist compensation. Cara died in November 2022 at her home in Florida, remembered chiefly for two of the era's defining movie anthems.
