Janet Jackson (born May 16, 1966, in Gary, Indiana) is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer, the youngest of the ten Jackson siblings. After a run as a child actress on shows like Good Times and Diff'rent Strokes, she signed with A&M Records and released two pop albums before breaking through with Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), which fused funk, R&B, new jack swing, and industrial-tinged pop with socially conscious lyrics and militaristic choreography. She went on to release Janet (1993), The Velvet Rope (1997), and All for You (2001), the title track of which gave her a tenth US number-one single. Jackson is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with an estimated 100 million records sold, and she holds the record for the most consecutive top-ten Billboard Hot 100 hits by a female artist. Rhythm Nation 1814 remains the only album to place seven singles in the Hot 100's top five. Her 1995 duet with brother Michael, 'Scream,' had a video that entered the Guinness World Records as the most expensive music video ever made, at roughly $7 million.
