History
M83 is a French electronic/dream-pop project formed in Antibes in 1999 by Anthony Gonzalez, initially alongside Nicolas Fromageau, who left after touring their 2003 album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. The band took its name from the spiral galaxy Messier 83. Since then Gonzalez has driven the project largely alone in the studio, working with guest musicians, and built a sound blending shoegaze, new wave, and ambient synths into widescreen, nostalgic soundscapes. The double album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (2011) brought a Grammy nomination and the breakout single "Midnight City," which went Platinum in the US despite peaking modestly on the Hot 100 (No. 72) - its real push came from French TV using it after Euro 2012 broadcasts and its adoption as the theme for BBC's London 2012 Olympics coverage and the show Made in Chelsea. The track's famous closing saxophone solo was played by James King of Fitz and the Tantrums. Gonzalez later scored the film Oblivion (2013); M83's most recent album is Fantasy (2023).
