History
Carly Rae Jepsen is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Mission, British Columbia, born in 1985, who became one of the defining voices of early-2010s electro-pop. She placed third on Canadian Idol in 2007, then independently released her debut album Tug of War in 2008, earning a Juno nomination for Best New Artist. Her career changed course in 2011 with "Call Me Maybe," co-written with bandmate Tavish Crowe and produced by Josh Ramsay: after Justin Bieber promoted the song online and manager Scooter Braun signed her, it topped charts in dozens of countries, went octuple-platinum in Canada, and became the best-selling single of 2012 worldwide. The 2012 album Kiss, which included the Owl City duet "Good Time," leaned into electro-house and synth-pop and won three Juno Awards, including Album of the Year. Her 2015 record E•MO•TION, steeped in 1980s-style synth-pop, sold modestly on release but has since been widely reassessed by critics as one of the decade's best pop albums, a rare case of a flop turning into a cult classic.
