History
Röyksopp is a Norwegian electronic music duo formed by childhood friends Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, who grew up together in Tromsø, far north of the Arctic Circle. The pair first worked together in the early 1990s as the ambient project Aedena Cycle before drifting apart; they reunited in Bergen in 1998 and took the name Röyksopp, part of the city's "Bergen Wave" electronic scene alongside Kings of Convenience and Annie. Their debut album, Melody A.M. (2001), blended trip-hop, disco, and electronic pop, topped the Norwegian charts, and produced the enduring singles "Eple" and "Poor Leno." The follow-up, The Understanding, reached number 13 in the UK and number two on Billboard's Top Electronic Albums chart, and the duo won a Spellemannprisen (Norway's Grammy) for Best Pop Group. Over two decades they became a defining act of European electronic pop, remixing artists including Depeche Mode, Beck, Lady Gaga, and Coldplay. Their name refers to a puffball mushroom that bursts into a cloud of spores when stepped on, an image the duo also linked to a nuclear mushroom cloud.
