History
Cut Copy are a synth-pop band formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 2001 by Dan Whitford (vocals, keyboards, guitar) as a home-recording project. The lineup grew to include Tim Hoey (guitar), Ben Browning (bass) and Mitchell Scott (drums); early bassist Bennett Foddy left in 2004 and later became a well-known video game designer, creating the notoriously difficult Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy. Cut Copy's sound blends synth-pop, indietronica, dance-punk and new wave, drawing on early-1980s disco and electronic influences. After the modestly received debut Bright Like Neon Love (2004), the band broke through with In Ghost Colours (2008), which debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and produced the singles "Lights & Music" and "Hearts on Fire". Their third album, Zonoscope (2011), won the ARIA Award for Best Dance Release and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. The 2013 single "Free Your Mind" featured actor Alexander Skarsgård in its music video. The band has continued releasing albums, including Freeze, Melt (2020) and Moments (2025).
