History
Hadn Dadn is a Russian synth-pop band formed in Moscow in 2016, fronted by lead singer Varvara Kraminova alongside Nikita Chernat and Sergei Kakurkin. The group's music blends synth-pop with Russian folklore motifs, describing its style with the invented word "lyaoakyn," coined by producer Anton Moiseenko: "lyao" for ethnic swagger and abandon, "akyn" (a term for a traditional Central Asian oral poet) for knowing the world through lived experience. The band emerged from an amateur video of the song "Wait," posted to VK by Kraminova and originally dedicated to singer Vladimir Presnyakov. Their 2018 album "Secret Album" and 2019's "Lyaoakyn" both landed on year-end best-of lists (Sobaka.ru, Time Out), and in 2018 the band won the Jager Music Awards' Young Blood category. Many songs are odes to specific cities, including Taganrog, Nakhichevan-on-Don, and Novosibirsk. Their biggest hit, "We Are at Home Today" (2018), became an unofficial anthem of Russia's 2020 COVID-19 self-isolation period, according to Meduza, and the band later performed on the "Evening Urgant" TV show.
