History
Empire of the Sun are an Australian electronic duo formed in Sydney in 2007 by Luke Steele (formerly of The Sleepy Jackson) and Nick Littlemore (of Pnau). The two had crossed paths since 2000 and finally clicked while writing for a Pnau album, which led them to launch their own project built on lush synth-pop, glam theatrics, and elaborate visual costuming, with Steele adopting the persona of a self-styled emperor. Their 2008 debut, Walking on a Dream, went double platinum in Australia and gold in the UK, and its title single became a defining indie-pop anthem of the era. The song had a second life in 2016 after featuring in a Honda Civic ad, finally cracking the US Hot 100, and by 2024 it had passed one billion streams, earning APRA AMCOS's inaugural Billion Award. The album swept seven ARIA Awards in 2009, including Album of the Year. Notably, Littlemore chose never to perform live with the group, leaving Steele as its sole touring frontman. The duo later released Ice on the Dune (2013), Two Vines (2016), and, after an eight-year gap, Ask That God (2024).
