History
Annie (born Anne Lilia Berge Strand, 21 November 1977) is a Norwegian singer, songwriter and DJ who emerged from Bergen's late-1990s club scene. While running a club night called Pop Till You Drop, she met producer Tore "Erot" Kroknes, and together they released the 1999 single "The Greatest Hit," a Madonna-sampling underground track that sold out within days and became a club favourite in Norway and Britain. Before the pair could finish an album, Kroknes died of a congenital heart defect in 2001, aged 23. Annie carried on alone, working with Röyksopp and Richard X, and signed to Britain's 679 Recordings for her debut album Anniemal (2004), a shimmering electro-pop record that earned widespread critical acclaim and several Norwegian music awards, with singles "Chewing Gum" and "Heartbeat." She followed it with a DJ-Kicks mix (2005) and a second album, Don't Stop (2009), on Smalltown Supersound. Despite strong reviews abroad, real commercial success stayed largely confined to Norway; critics have nicknamed her "the Norwegian Kylie." She now lives in Berlin and continues to DJ and record.
