History
Goldfrapp were an English electronic music duo formed in London in 1999 by Alison Goldfrapp (vocals, synthesiser) and Will Gregory (synthesiser). Their 2000 debut, Felt Mountain, was a cinematic, trip-hop-tinged record that earned a Mercury Prize shortlisting despite modest chart placing. The duo then swerved hard into glam rock and synth-pop on Black Cherry (2003), pushing further into dance music with Supernature (2005), which produced three US Billboard dance number ones and a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Later records kept shifting shape: Seventh Tree (2008) turned ambient and pastoral, drawing on nature and paganism; Head First (2010) leaned into 1980s-style synth-pop and brought a second Grammy nomination; Tales of Us (2013) went folktronica; Silver Eye followed in 2017. Active until a 2022 hiatus, Goldfrapp built a reputation on genre-hopping from one album to the next rather than settling into a signature sound, a trait critics repeatedly singled out across their seven-album run.
