History
Yelle is a French electropop trio formed in 2005 around singer Julie Budet (stage name Yelle) and producer GrandMarnier (Jean-François Perrier), who had been making music together since 2000; keyboardist-producer Tepr (Tanguy Destable) joined before the debut album. The band's name began as an acronym for "You Enjoy Life" ("YEL"), later feminized to Yelle because a Belgian act already used that name. They broke through in September 2005, when a mock diss track aimed at rapper Cuizinier, later retitled "Je veux te voir," spread on MySpace and reached No. 4 in France. Their debut album, Pop Up (2007), went Silver in France; Safari Disco Club followed in 2011, and Complètement fou in 2014, co-produced by Dr. Luke, who signed the band to his Kemosabe Records after hearing their remix of Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold," then L'Ère du Verseau in 2020. Despite singing exclusively in French, Yelle built a large international following, playing Coachella three times and opening for Katy Perry's 2011 UK tour.
