History
Paulina Rubio sings Latin pop with a light, slightly nasal tone and a delivery that stays on top of the beat, which is why her records read as dance music even when the song underneath is a ballad. She started as a teenager in a Mexican pop group assembled for television, a training ground that gave her stagecraft before she had a solo voice, and the blonde image she carried out of it followed her for decades. Her solo turn at the start of the 2000s was the real break: producers moved her away from soft Mexican pop towards Spanish and European pop production, guitars and programmed percussion pushed forward, and Y Yo Sigo Aqui became the song that reintroduced her. Ni Una Sola Palabra took the same approach further, a driving chorus built for radio that went to the top of the Billboard Latin chart and travelled across Spanish-speaking markets. She has kept working through shifting Latin pop fashions, and her catalogue traces what mainstream pop in Spanish sounded like across three decades.
