History
MGMT is an American rock duo, Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, who met as freshman art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, and started jamming together in 2002 under the name The Management. They renamed themselves MGMT and, after graduating in 2005, released the Time to Pretend EP through Cantora Records before signing to Columbia. Their 2007 debut album Oracular Spectacular, built on psychedelic synth-pop with a satirical edge, produced the singles "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel," and "Kids," and sold over 500,000 copies in the US while going platinum in Australia, the UK, and Ireland. "Kids" was named NME's top single of 2008, and the Justice remix of "Electric Feel" won the band its first Grammy, for Best Remixed Recording; MGMT itself was later nominated for Best New Artist. The band has since released four more studio albums, most recently Loss of Life in 2024, moving further into looser, more experimental psychedelic territory.
