History
Grimes, the stage name of Claire Elise Boucher, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and producer born March 17, 1988, in Vancouver. She started uploading music to Myspace in 2007, picking the genre tag "grime" for all three of her allowed listings without actually knowing the UK grime sound, and the misfire stuck as her name. After moving to Montreal to attend McGill University, she self-released two lo-fi concept albums, Geidi Primes and Halfaxa, in 2010, then signed to 4AD and broke through with 2012's Visions, which won a Juno Award and produced the singles Genesis and Oblivion. Her sound blends synth-pop, dream pop, and art pop with science-fiction and fantasy themes. 2015's Art Angels, made with live instruments, topped Billboard's Alternative Albums chart and was widely named album of the year by critics; 2020's Miss Anthropocene followed. Notably, she wrote much of Visions during a nine-day stretch without sleep, later saying it felt like "channelling spirits." She also voiced a character in the video game Cyberpunk 2077.
