History
Hot Chip are an English synth-pop and alternative dance band formed in London in 2000 by Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, who met as teenagers at Elliott School in Putney. The core lineup expanded during work on their debut album to include Al Doyle, Owen Clarke, and Felix Martin, with early drummer Rob Smoughton still rejoining for occasional shows. After two self-released EPs, Mexico (2001) and San Frandisco (2002), the band signed to Moshi Moshi for their debut LP, Coming on Strong (2004). Their sound blends synth-pop with house and disco influences, moving from a stripped-back, acoustic-leaning start toward denser electronic production. The 2006 follow-up The Warning was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize and produced the singles "Over and Over" and "Boy from School." Its successor, Made in the Dark (2008), included "Ready for the Floor," a UK top-ten hit that earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording. Hot Chip have released seven studio albums to date, most recently Freakout/Release (2022), and remain active on record and on stage.
