History
Clean Bandit formed in Cambridge, England, around 2008, when cellist Grace Chatto and producer/bassist Jack Patterson began fusing classical string arrangements with house and dance-pop production. Violinist Neil Amin-Smith and drummer Luke Patterson joined soon after, giving the group its signature sound: four-on-the-floor beats layered under live strings. Their breakthrough came with "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne, which topped the UK Singles Chart in 2014 and won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2015; their debut album New Eyes also reached number one in the UK. The band's biggest commercial hit, "Rockabye" featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie, spent nine weeks at UK number one in late 2016, making it one of the best-selling singles of the decade. "Symphony," with Zara Larsson, gave them another chart-topper in 2017. Neil Amin-Smith departed in 2019, leaving Chatto and Jack Patterson as the core act. Clean Bandit remain best known for pairing orchestral instrumentation with club-ready electronic production.
