History

Moloko started as an oddity and ended as a dance act, and the distance between those two states is the whole story. The Sheffield duo of a producer and a singer began with lopsided, humid electronics and lyrics delivered somewhere between a purr and a joke, closer to trip hop than to the floor, which is the mode of Fun for Me. Sing It Back turned that on its head. Remixed into a slow, hypnotic house track, it became one of the most played club records of 1999 and pulled the group into an audience that had no interest in their earlier strangeness. They used the opening rather than repeating it, and The Time Is Now arrived with live strings and a full band feel behind the groove. The constant is the singing: conversational, theatrical, timed like speech, willing to drop to an aside in the middle of a hook. Listeners know Moloko by that voice sitting slightly apart from the beat, dry and amused while the track underneath does the pleading.
