History

Birmingham, 1978, and the name comes from a villain in the film Barbarella. Duran Duran built an audience at the Rum Runner club, where Nick Rhodes DJ'd and John Taylor worked, before the line-up settled around Simon Le Bon, Rhodes, John and Roger Taylor, and Andy Taylor, none of the three Taylors related to each other. Rio (1982) fixed the sound: Rhodes layering a Jupiter-8 into a bright wash while John Taylor played bass lines lifted more from Chic than from anything in new wave, with Le Bon urgent and slightly strained over the top. Russell Mulcahy shot the videos in Sri Lanka and Antigua, MTV played them relentlessly, and that is how a British band became a fixture of American teenage bedrooms. "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Save a Prayer" and "The Reflex" followed. In 1985 they recorded "A View to a Kill" and remain the only act to take a James Bond theme to number one in the United States.
