History
New Order formed in Manchester, England, in 1980, when Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar), Peter Hook (bass) and Stephen Morris (drums) regrouped after the suicide of Joy Division singer Ian Curtis that May. Keyboardist Gillian Gilbert joined that autumn, completing the classic lineup. Signed to Manchester's Factory Records and closely tied to its Haçienda club, New Order fused post-punk with electronic dance music, becoming one of the most influential acts of the decade and pioneers of what's now called alternative dance. Their 1983 single "Blue Monday" remains the best-selling 12-inch single in history, and albums like Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), Substance (1987) and Technique (1989) cemented their run of critical and commercial success. The band split in 1993, reunited in 1998, and continued despite Hook's acrimonious 2007 departure, releasing Music Complete in 2015. In 2026, New Order and Joy Division were inducted together into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a single act.
