History
Depeche Mode formed in Basildon, Essex, England, in 1980, growing out of an earlier schoolboy project between Vince Clarke and Andy Fletcher. Martin Gore joined as a third member, and Dave Gahan came aboard as lead singer after Clarke heard him perform a David Bowie cover at a local youth club. The band helped define British synthpop, built almost entirely on synthesizers, drum machines and Gore's melancholic songwriting after Clarke departed in 1981 to form Yazoo and later Erasure. Alan Wilder joined in 1982, cementing the classic four-piece lineup that lasted until his own departure in 1995, after which Gahan, Gore and Fletcher continued as a trio. Their 1990 album Violator, with singles "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence," remains their best-known work and pushed them from cult synth-pop act to arena-filling stadium band, drawing over 60,000 fans to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena in 1988. Depeche Mode have sold more than 100 million records and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. Andy Fletcher died in 2022; Gahan and Gore continue as the band today.
