History
Metronomy began in 1999 as a bedroom electronic project by teenager Joseph Mount in Totnes, Devon, England, before evolving into a full band after Mount moved to Brighton in 2002. Their sound blends synth-pop, indie electronic, and dance-rock, marked by angular basslines, quirky rhythms, and Mount's laconic vocals. The classic lineup added Oscar Cash (keyboards, sax), Anna Prior (drums), and Olugbenga Adelekan (bass), with founding member Gabriel Stebbing departing after the 2008 album Nights Out. Their breakthrough came with 2011's The English Riviera, a concept album evoking the Devon coastline, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Later albums include Love Letters, Summer 08, Metronomy Forever, and Small World; in 2024 the band signed to Ninja Tune. Mount has also remixed tracks for artists including Gorillaz, Lady Gaga, Franz Ferdinand, and Goldfrapp, building a parallel reputation as a producer.
