History

Alizee sings light, and the lightness is a construction rather than an accident. She came from Ajaccio in Corsica and was still a teenager when "Moi... Lolita" appeared at the turn of the 2000s, written and produced for her by Mylene Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat: a mid-tempo track with a mandolin-like guitar figure, a chorus of nonsense syllables, and a lyric full of double meanings sung as though none of them had been noticed. The record crossed most of Europe and became unusually large in Russia, where it stayed on television long after France had moved on. "J'en ai marre !" pushed the same voice into a harder dance arrangement, and "L'Alize" showed the softer end of it. Her delivery is deliberately narrow, close to the microphone, breathy and unornamented, with the phrasing a fraction behind the beat. What listeners recognise is the gap between the innocence of the tone and the wordplay in the text.
