History

Janelle Monáe was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1985, moved to Atlanta and built the Wondaland collective there before Bad Boy picked up her early work. The EP Metropolis: The Chase Suite (2007) opened a science-fiction storyline about an android named Cindi Mayweather, which then ran across The ArchAndroid (2010) and The Electric Lady (2013). Both albums are structured as suites, with orchestral overtures dropped between funk tracks that owe a direct debt to Prince. "Tightrope", with Big Boi, shows the style at its plainest: James Brown rhythm guitar, horn stabs, a lead that switches between rapping and singing. Dirty Computer (2018) dropped the android framing for first-person writing and was nominated for Album of the Year; Prince had worked on it with her before his death. Monáe acts as well, in Moonlight, Hidden Figures and Glass Onion. For years she performed in a black-and-white tuxedo, presented as a uniform rather than a costume.
