History

Devourment are the Dallas band most often credited with defining slam death metal as a style of its own. Formed in Texas in the mid-nineties, they released "Molesting the Decapitated" in 1999, and that record became the template for a whole underground: down-tuned guitars grinding through slow, lurching breakdowns, blast beats used as contrast rather than as the main event, and guttural vocals pushed so low that words disappear into a gurgle. Where earlier death metal chased speed and technical riffing, Devourment built their songs around the groove of the slam itself, the moment where everything drops to half-time and the whole band hits together. "Butcher the Weak" continued in that vein in the mid-2000s, and "Unleash the Carnivore" followed in 2009, keeping the same crushing, half-time logic. Their production is thick and muddy by design, and they are known by the sheer weight of those breakdowns and a vocal sound closer to an animal than a singer. Many later slam bands openly trace their approach back to them.
