History
Deicide play death metal at full speed and full provocation: blasting drums, twin guitars trading chaotic leads, and lyrics built entirely on hostility to Christianity. The band came out of Tampa, Florida, in the late 1980s, first under the name Amon, around bassist and vocalist Glen Benton, drummer Steve Asheim and guitarists Eric and Brian Hoffman. Their self-titled debut on Roadrunner in 1990 arrived at the height of the Florida scene and stood out for its speed and for Benton's layered vocals, a deep growl doubled with a high shriek. Legion, which followed, is short, dense and technical, and Once Upon the Cross kept the attack while tightening the songwriting. Benton's stage persona, including the inverted cross branded on his forehead, made the band a lightning rod for controversy, and that notoriety sometimes overshadowed the music. The Hoffman brothers left in the mid-2000s, and the band continued with new guitarists around Benton and Asheim. A listener recognises Deicide by relentless tempos, swirling atonal solos and that doubled low and high vocal delivery.
