History

Slam death metal, also called slamming brutal death metal or just slam, is a microgenre of brutal death metal shaped by New York hardcore punk. Its birth is usually dated to the second: 2:52 into “Liege of Inveracity” on Suffocation's 1991 album Effigy of the Forgotten, which is why the New York band are called the parents of the style. Through the 1990s much of the New York death metal scene fell under the spell of NYHC. Internal Bleeding shaped slam and also played a part in the birth of deathcore, while Dying Fetus, Disgorge, Skinless, Pyrexia and Eternal Suffering supplied the slams themselves: muted, chromatic riffs. Devourment's Molesting the Decapitated counts among the first albums of the genre. The focus is rhythm rather than speed or technique. Guitars are tuned to drop B or lower, sound dirty and lean on palm muting, and the skank beat common in extreme metal is avoided. Breakdowns and shared vocal techniques make slam easy to mistake for deathcore, but it is muddier, less legible and less predictable in form, often without choruses or fixed sections. In the 2000s scenes grew in Japan, Russia and Indonesia, with Traumatomy the leading Russian band.
