History

Cryptopsy play some of the most extreme and technically demanding death metal ever recorded: blast beats at breakneck speed, abrupt shifts of tempo, dense riffing and deep, guttural vocals. The band comes from Montreal and took the name Cryptopsy in the early 1990s after starting under other names. Drummer Flo Mounier, who joined early on and has stayed ever since, became central to their reputation, known for a precision at extreme speed that set a benchmark for death metal drumming. None So Vile (1996), with Lord Worm on vocals, is widely treated as a cult classic of brutal and technical death metal and remains the record most often named when the band comes up. Lord Worm left in 1997, and Mike DiSalvo sang on Whisper Supremacy (1998), a record that leaned further into jazz-like complexity, and And Then You'll Beg (2000). The lineup has changed many times since, but the commitment to speed and technique has held. The signature is relentless drumming, chaotic yet exact arrangements and a suffocating, oppressive atmosphere.
