History
Suffocation wrote much of the rulebook for brutal and technical death metal: down-tuned guitars, fast and intricate riffs, hyperactive drumming and the slow, crushing breakdowns that later bands turned into a whole style. The band formed in 1989 on Long Island, New York, and by 1990 the classic lineup had come together with vocalist Frank Mullen, guitarists Terrance Hobbs and Doug Cerrito and drummer Mike Smith. Their 1991 debut Effigy of the Forgotten, released by Roadrunner, became a blueprint for death metal through the decade, and Pierced from Within in 1995 refined the approach. The band split in 1998, returned in 2003 and released Souls to Deny on Relapse in 2004, proving the sound had lost none of its force. Mullen's deep, rhythmic growl was a defining feature until he stepped back from full-time touring in 2018; Ricky Myers, formerly of Disgorge, took over the vocals. Hobbs remained the constant. Listeners know Suffocation by riffs that twist through odd rhythms at speed, then drop into a heavy half-time section that feels like a floor giving way.
