History
Incantation play death metal at its lowest and darkest: heavily down-tuned guitars, bottomless guttural vocals and songs that lurch from blasting chaos into crushing, doom-paced crawls. The band formed in New York at the end of the 1980s around guitarist John McEntee, who has remained its constant through many lineup changes. Their debut Onward to Golgotha, released in the early 1990s, sounded murkier and more oppressive than most of their peers, and Mortal Throne of Nazarene and Diabolical Conquest pushed the same approach further. Their lyrics are relentlessly anti-Christian and blasphemous, closer to grim ritual than to gore. For years they stood a little apart from the faster, more technical Florida and New York scenes, but their influence grew steadily, and the whole cavernous death metal movement of the 2000s and 2010s, from Greece to Scandinavia to the Americas, traces much of its sound straight back to them. A listener recognises Incantation by the cave-deep vocals, the sudden drops into slow, sludgy riffs and an atmosphere that feels heavy and airless.
