History
Destiny's Child formed in Houston, Texas, in 1990, when nine-year-olds Beyoncé Knowles and LaTavia Roberson met at an audition and began performing as part of a larger group called Girl's Tyme. Kelly Rowland joined in 1992 and LeToya Luckett in 1993; after cycling through several names, the quartet signed to Columbia Records in 1996 as Destiny's Child, a name drawn from the Book of Isaiah. Their R&B/pop sound broke through with 1999's The Writing's on the Wall, powered by the number-one hits "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Say My Name." A bitter lineup shakeup followed in 1999-2000, replacing Roberson and Luckett with Michelle Williams and briefly Farrah Franklin, before settling into the trio of Knowles, Rowland, and Williams for Survivor (2001) and Destiny Fulfilled (2004), which included "Bootylicious" and "Survivor." The group disbanded in 2006 but reunited for the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show and Beyoncé's 2018 Coachella set. Destiny's Child has sold over 60 million records worldwide and is regarded as one of the best-selling girl groups in music history.
