History
NSYNC formed in Orlando, Florida in 1995, put together by Chris Kirkpatrick and rounded out by JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, and (after an early lineup change) Lance Bass. The group built its sound on pop, dance-pop, teen pop, and R&B vocal harmonies, launching first in Europe via BMG Ariola Munich before breaking into the US market with "I Want You Back" off their self-titled 1997 debut. Their 2000 album No Strings Attached became a genuine chart landmark: it sold over a million copies in a single day and 2.4 million in its first week in the US, a record that stood for more than fifteen years. Follow-up Celebrity (2001) opened with 1.8 million copies. Hits like "Bye Bye Bye," "Tearin' Up My Heart," "Girlfriend," and the Hot 100 chart-topper "It's Gonna Be Me" pushed lifetime sales past 70 million, making them one of the best-selling boy bands ever. The group went on hiatus in 2002 but has reunited periodically since, including a 2013 VMAs performance, a 2018 Hollywood Walk of Fame star, and a 2023 return for the song "Better Place."
