History

It began as a burlesque revue, founded by the choreographer Robin Antin in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, with a rotating cast performing in city clubs. The recording group arrived a decade later, Nicole Scherzinger singing lead and the rest of the line-up behind her. PCD (2005) was built by producers from the will.i.am and Timbaland end of club pop: "Don't Cha" with Busta Rhymes, "Buttons", and the ballad "Stickwitu", which drew a Grammy nomination. Doll Domination followed in 2008. For their moment the arrangements are unusually empty: long vamps over one chord, hand claps and finger snaps carrying the groove instead of a dense rhythm section, the lead vocal moving between half-spoken taunt and full belt. Very little happens harmonically, which is exactly what makes the staging read. The group stopped recording around 2010 and Scherzinger continued alone, with a reunion announced at the end of the decade.
