History
Katy Perry, born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, is an American singer and songwriter. Raised by Pentecostal pastor parents, she grew up on gospel music and began singing in church as a child, releasing an unsuccessful Christian album, Katy Hudson, at age 16. After moving to Los Angeles and signing with Capitol Records, she broke through with the pop rock album One of the Boys (2008), led by the chart-topping single "I Kissed a Girl." Her 2010 album Teenage Dream became the only album by a woman to produce five U.S. number-one singles: "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework," "E.T.," and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)." Later albums Prism (2013), Witness (2017), Smile (2020), and 143 (2024) continued her run of hits including "Roar" and "Dark Horse." With over 151 million records sold, she is among the best-selling music artists of all time and holds multiple Guinness World Records. She served as a judge on American Idol from 2018 to 2024 and in 2025 flew to space aboard Blue Origin NS-31.
