History

One Direction were assembled on a television talent show from five soloists who had not made it through on their own, and the group turned that awkward origin into the defining pop act of the early 2010s. The early singles ran on bright guitar power pop, handclaps and a chorus that arrives almost immediately: What Makes You Beautiful is built to hit its hook inside forty seconds. What kept them going past the usual boy band shelf life was the arrangement of voices. Leads rotated between members rather than sitting with one singer, so a song like Story of My Life moves through several distinct timbres before the harmonies stack up behind them. Later records pulled toward rock and folk-pop, with live drums and a rougher edge on the vocals. They took four albums to the top of the American chart in consecutive years, which no group had managed before, and then stopped at the height of it. The members went on to solo careers that sound nothing like each other.
