History
Spice Girls were an English girl group formed in London in 1994 through a management audition process, before the members left their original managers, hired Simon Fuller, and signed with Virgin Records. The lineup was Mel B ("Scary Spice"), Melanie C ("Sporty Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), and Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice"), performing dance-pop, teen pop, and R&B-inflected material built around their "girl power" slogan. Their 1996 debut single "Wannabe" topped the charts in 37 countries, and the album Spice sold over 23 million copies, becoming the best-selling album by a female group in history. Follow-up album Spiceworld (1997) and the film Spice World cemented their fame; the 1998 Spiceworld Tour drew an estimated 2.1 million attendees. Halliwell left in 1998, and the group's third album, Forever (2000), preceded a hiatus for solo careers, though they reunited for tours in 2007-2008 and 2018-2019 and performed at the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony. They have sold more than 145 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling girl group of all time, and won five Brit Awards among other honors.
