History
Dan Reed Network is an American funk rock band formed in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, by singer-guitarist Dan Reed and drummer Dan Pred, who had met in high school in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The classic lineup added guitarist Brion James, bassist Melvin Brannon II, and keyboardist Rick DiGiallonardo, later replaced by Blake Sakamoto. Signed to Mercury Records, the band built its sound on a hybrid of hard rock riffs and funk grooves, mixing heavy guitars with syncopated bass and horn-tinged arrangements. Their self-titled 1987 debut, produced by Bruce Fairbairn, spawned the band's only Billboard Hot 100 top-40 single, "Ritual" (No. 38), and earned a four-star Rolling Stone review. The follow-up, Slam, was produced by Nile Rodgers. A genuine career highlight: the Rolling Stones picked Dan Reed Network as main support for their Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour in 1990, their first tour in nearly a decade. The band went on hiatus in 1993, reunited in 2012, and has since released new albums including Fight Another Day (2016) and Let's Hear It for the King (2022).
