History
Clare Teal is an English jazz singer and broadcaster, born 14 May 1973 in Kildwick, Yorkshire. She grew up obsessed with big-band singers like Ella Fitzgerald through her father's collection of 78rpm records, and found her voice almost by accident: at the University of Wolverhampton, lacking a clarinet for an exam, she sang instead and scored her best grades ever. After a spell in advertising, a chance booking standing in for Stacey Kent at a festival in Wales led to a three-album deal with Candid Records. In 2004 she signed with Sony Jazz in what was reported as the biggest recording contract ever given to a British jazz singer; the resulting album, Don't Talk, topped the UK jazz charts and cracked the Top 20 of the UK Albums Chart. Her swing-flavoured cover of "California Dreaming" caught broadcaster Michael Parkinson's ear, and she later recorded "Carrying a Torch" with Van Morrison. Teal presented BBC Radio 2's Big Band Special and her own weekend show for fifteen years (2006-2021), then moved to Jazz FM. She has won British Jazz Vocalist of the Year four times.
