History
Gregory Porter is an American jazz, blues, soul, and gospel singer-songwriter born November 4, 1971, in Sacramento, California, and raised in Bakersfield by his mother Ruth, a minister who put him in church choirs early on. A shoulder injury cut short a football scholarship at San Diego State University and redirected him toward music; his mother, dying of cancer when he was 21, reportedly told him, "Sing, baby, sing." After moving to Brooklyn in 2004, he worked as a chef while building a following through a weekly residency at Harlem's St. Nick's Pub, out of which his touring band took shape. He released two albums on Motéma, Water (2010) and Be Good (2012), before signing to Blue Note Records in 2013. His rich, gospel-rooted baritone carried him to a crossover success rare for jazz: Liquid Spirit (2013) reached the UK top 10, went gold, and won the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, a feat he repeated in 2017 with Take Me to the Alley. He has also performed at Glastonbury and BBC Radio 2's Hyde Park concert.
