History
Samara Joy McLendon was born November 11, 1999, in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx, New York, into a musical family: her grandparents led the gospel group the Savettes, and her father toured with Andrae Crouch. She trained at Fordham High School for the Arts, winning Best Vocalist at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington festival, then studied jazz at SUNY Purchase as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. Her rich contralto voice fuses traditional jazz phrasing with gospel and soul roots, drawing on influences from Sarah Vaughan to Stevie Wonder. She won the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition while still a student, then released her self-titled debut in 2021 and signed to Verve for 2022's Linger Awhile, which topped the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. She has since won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist (2023) and repeated Best Jazz Vocal Album honors. A notable trivia point: she built a large following on TikTok, helping introduce classic-style jazz vocals to a much younger audience than the genre typically reaches.
