History
Al Jarreau (1940-2017) was an American jazz singer born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of a minister and a church pianist who had him singing from childhood. He earned a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa in 1964 and worked as a counselor before committing to music in the late 1960s, moving to Los Angeles by way of San Francisco's jazz clubs. Nicknamed the "Acrobat of Scat," Jarreau built a style that blended jazz, R&B, soul, and gospel, treating his voice almost as an instrument through elaborate scatting and vocal effects. His 1981 album Breakin' Away spent two years on the Billboard 200 and helped define the era's smooth L.A. pop-R&B sound. He is one of few vocalists to win Grammy Awards in three separate categories, jazz, pop, and R&B, totaling seven Grammys across a 21-album studio and live catalog. He also sang the Grammy-nominated theme to the TV series Moonlighting and appeared on the 1985 charity single "We Are the World."
