History
Harry Connick Jr. was born September 11, 1967, in New Orleans, where he grew up steeped in the city's jazz tradition, studying piano and giving recitals as a teenager before moving to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music. Signed to Columbia Records, he debuted with an instrumental standards album, then broke through nationally when director Rob Reiner hired him to record the soundtrack for When Harry Met Sally... (1989), a double-platinum success that won him his first Grammy Award, for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. Through the early 1990s he released a run of hit albums mixing swing, big band, and traditional pop, including We Are in Love and the Christmas record When My Heart Finds Christmas, his best-selling US album. As of 2019 he had sold over 30 million albums worldwide and, as of 2009, held more number-one U.S. jazz chart albums than any other artist in the chart's history. He also built a parallel acting career, appearing in Memphis Belle, Independence Day, and Hope Floats, and later played Leo Markus on the NBC sitcom Will & Grace. He has won three Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards.
